When looking slightly further afield for some interesting landscape opportunities I came across a great location close to Porlock Weir.
Once I started researching the area for a shoot it turns out there was going to be a golden opportunity to capture something very special on evening of Saturday 13th as the area in question only gets two high tides a year, high enough to totally flood the area, a 10.4m high tide was predicted. The weather was looking to be stupendous for the evening, with temperatures in the high 20’s and the sea temperatures around 19 degrees. To top it off the sunset was also aligning with our location and falling within our field of view… 3 out of 3 can’t be ignored. On the Friday Ian. D contacted me to say that Malcolm Dillaway had seen and commented on one of our Photo-Walks. I contacted Malcolm to see if he was interested in joining Ian Davis & Matt Dearing (a fellow Photographer and Dog Walker) on this Photo-Walk#6 (Drive) to get some stunning sunsets, Malcolm jumped at the opportunity, so the car was full. I dropped the bombshell (which I'd only found out about Friday PM) … Due to the super moon the tide was not going to be the predicted 10.4m but some 11.6m, we were going to get WET. I thought best to advise them to bring the following essentials as well as their cameras: Walking boots; drinking & washing fluids; a towel; a full change of clothes; a torch to see our way back to the car (very low light pollution) so very dark. Well, Saturday 4pm came and we set off, the car was buzzing with chitchat all the way to Porlock… Until we found out the Fish & Chip shop where we were dure to stop and have our tea was closed due to staff sickness… bang went our tea! Not all was lost as we landed up getting sandwiches from the local 'One-Stop'… To be honest it was too hot to eat - much anyway. After eating we made our way down to the car park at Porlock Weir, we were all still discussing photography ideas etc. as we set off down the beach. After stopping a couple of times to take some photos we arrived at the Porlock Moore. Everyone got themselves setup and began taking the photos we'd come for... At the peak of high tide Matt & myself were just about up to our armpits in very warm seawater; and still clicking away! A sort video outlining the landscape can be viewed (below) plus a selection of images outlining the area and an example image of what I set out to achieve a ‘Fine Art Landscape’... A great evening was had by all and car was buzzing with chitchat once again all the way back to Weston-Super-Mare. Needlessly I’m now working on the next Photo-Walk(Drive). You know that thing which, from time to time, happens - because your a 'photographer' and 'know' about cameras and stuff - when someone brings you camera gear that they've not used for about ten years. They've had it from new, maybe even used it for the first few years; say around 5000 clicks worth; though it's been 'stored' ever since!
They say something such as: 'I no longer need nor want this kit, as I've a [insert an Android or Apple model here] smart phone'! Adding: 'maybe you could clean and/or use or sell it'? When this happens I say "hold up a moment" then take a photograph - in this case a black & white photograph of a lamp taken with a mint condition Pentax K-100D[6Mp] and Schneider Kreuznach Lens - to at least show them what their outfit is capable still of producing. Few if any people have subsequently kept their outfit! I reckon if just one ever did, for me it would be worthwhile. "Some wore waders and some... not so much." Ian Johnson took us further afield for this 'Photo-Walk' [#6] - having first conducted much research regarding: place; time; weather; tide and so forth. With the prospect of an 11-6 metre[Super-Moon-Assisted] tidal rise we were off to Porlock Weir. It promised to be a rather different evening's photography. We weren't disappointed! I'll let Ian. J give you chapter and verse on the trip, however, I can tell you that when we arrived the area you see in these photographs was mostly dry marshland. I took these two shots with wet feet, up to my knees, having clambered up on to the small bank; which held the water back. Are any Members interested in Analogue 'Old School Photography'?
If you are: BPG has been extended a Private View Invitation from 5:00pm to 8:00pm,17th August 2022. Ian Johnson reckons he may be available for another Photo-Walk or two. These would be 23rd & 30th August. If any member is interested in going on one of the above evenings, please contact Ian or Ian as soon as possible.
A very pleasant evening's stroll along the Promenade and Beach at Weston Seafront. The lighting was mostly cloudy though a little blue sky, along with late, diffused, sunlight, poked through now and again. Towards the end of our walk the tide was well on its way in - which always seems improve things, I find.
The photograph above was the last I took on this walk. Plain and simple; the lighting though was starting to trouble the shadows and just about doing for the highlight however, I think the exposure is just about optimal for the effect I wanted. Due to holidays and other commitments (this may prove to be the last Tuesday evening Photo-Walk Ian. J and I will be able to make for this Summer 2022 recess). Having said that: if members would like us to do another walk, I'm sure we would make every effort to arrange something. Scrub the preceding text within the brackets, as there has since been developments. And, now, two other walks may be arranged for 23rd Aug 22 & 30th Aug 22! As usual: please let us know if you have anywhere and/or any ideas in mind! |
